I realize I'm several weeks off for Nate's first day of school, but I did document it, and I promised my mother-in-law I'd get the pictures up last week. I'm a failure this week at getting stuff done! Oh well, hopefully if I get the pictures up I will be forgiven.
Nate had a great start to school. Eric and I have been a little nervous he wouldn't toe the line. He seems to be fairly smart, but at home has a hard time listening and following directions. He seems to not have any of these problems at school and is just sucking up information like a sponge. He's stayed on green and I've been told he is trying really hard to follow the rules in the hallways of not running up to the staff and other teachers.
There were no problems dropping him off for the first day of school, he was SO excited he jumped out of the car. He did however cry on Gwen's first day of school, he was so upset he wasn't starting on the first day. Of course that could be because they were both so excited they didn't go to sleep on time.
So, here are the pictures!

First day of First Grade! and meet the teacher for 2!
Oh my, I have 2 children starting school, one started today, the other cried in his room wanting to know why he couldn't start today! (he starts next week!) Yesterday evening we had "Meet the Teacher". We already know Nate's teacher, she was Gwen's first teacher, so Nate is entirely comfortable there. He didn't know the assistant, but I don't think he really cared, he just jumped right in. We also met Gwen's teacher and assistant. Gwen's teacher is new to the school and we met her the night before at the "ice cream social" for new families. I was fairly impressed, since she remembered Gwen's name. Gwen said she only confused 2 of the boys today, still fairly impressed. Gwen's class is small, only 17 kids, and she has 2 new kids to the school in her class. She is enjoying class so far, and already came home with homework! The nice thing about 1st grade homework is apparently she has the whole week to work on it, and since they started on a Wed, she apparently has until next Friday to finish. The nice thing is we don't have anything to do in the evenings/afternoons, except pace with Rachel, so homework can easily be done while I pace. Which will likely be nice for Gwen, I won't be breathing down her neck while she's trying to do homework, just checking as I pass by.
Here is another slideshow from yesterday and today. I swear I will post pictures again on here, but only if I don't have more than say 5 pictures, gotta keep the amount of uploading to a minimum!

The Jungle
Every year, starting in Kindergarten the kids at the school do a play. They combine both classes and work for weeks on this play (I have heard there is a 3 year rotation on the plays, which means Nate's will be different!) Everyone has lines and parts, Gwen was stripes #6. They had a "dress rehearsal" in front of the whole school in the morning and then that night we had to be there kind of early, so they could get ready! Gwen was also a greeter and handed out programs.
We worked for what felt like months on her lines and she finally got them. There were about 6 or 7 songs, it was really cute. Some of it very funny. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the camera was going to die. Eric mentioned when we got there, oh yeah, the battery was low last time I used it, helpful! Gwen had quite the problem with her hat!
The scene shown below was hilarious, there was at least one kid who really got into the whole guitar thing, which was really fun to watch.
Here is Gwen doing her part, she did a great job and we are very proud of her! Since she mostly mumbles we are very excited when we don't have to strain to hear her talk.
They had a nice little reception for afterwards and Gwen got to keep some of her props, very exciting stuff!

Ella
To continue the backlog of pictures here we have Gwen's next school project, making an animal/creature to be 3D out of simple 3D shapes so the kids could learn about 3D. I decided not to go to the store and buy stuff, so I gathered some objects and Gwen and I went to work! I had to help her cut out the fabric, it was a little to strong, but she glued it and did everything else.
We used a yarn ball, water bottle, toilet paper rolls string and a cord hider thingy. Gwen and I got it most of the way done over a couple days. But it was a little top heavy and we hadn't attached tusks or a tail, so I tasked Eric to help her finish. I think I turned out pretty well! They glued it onto some cardboard and now it stands up!
Gwen sometimes chooses to do her own hair for school. It cracks me up because she uses about 5 bows or something like that. I thought Mom would appreciate this picture, especially if you've seen the picture of me from preschool, where I did my own hair!

Father-daughter dance and Valentines
The school has a father-daughter dance and Gwen really wanted to go. I kept asking Eric if they were going to go and he'd say "I don't know anything about it". So finally, at dinner the other night I asked and he said, I'll go if someone asks me. So Gwen asked and low and behold they went to the dance. I snapped a couple pictures before they left.
Unfortunately I couldn't get her to change out of her socks, but I did get her to put a shirt under her dress. WIN! She also did her own hair and jewelry. She is starting to get into necklaces and such, not so much bracelets or hair. She is wearing a "medal" she made it school.
Nate and I waited anxiously for them to come home, well Nate fell asleep, and I waited. Gwen was fairly tired but I did find out they did have fun, ate lots of snacks and didn't dance. Eric spoke to some of the other Dads and asked Gwen to dance, but she didn't want to, she just wanted to hang with her friends. Apparently the had photographer who took pictures and Gwen brought home 2 flowers. Eric got a glimpse of what the future will be and I am not sure, he might be scared.
Nate and I decided to secretly make some Valentine's cookies. Sadly, I had to do a babysitting thing today, so I didn't have time to put the cookies away. Guess who spotted them about 2.5 sec after she walked in the door. Guess who told Daddy immediately so she could have some for dessert. Oh well. Guess I don't have to sneak them into lunches tomorrow.
Nate really likes to help and now he has the fancy apron for helping. He was a much better helper when it was just us and I didn't have to decide which kid does each task.

School happenings
This week was Catholic Schools week and so they had busy happenings at the school this week. The Kindergartners were invited back to school on Wednesday night in their PJs for bedtime stories and bedtime snacks. Gwen was SO excited. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture. She had a good time and fell asleep almost as soon as she went into her room.
Friday night they had the faculty/staff basketball game. One of Gwen's teachers was playing in the game, as was our neighbor. We were surprised at how evenly matched the teams were and there seemed to be a lot of players that weren't faculty or staff...I guess we will figure that stuff out as the kids get older. The Pastor and the principal were designated foul shot takers. Gwen sat with her friends under the basket. I couldn't believe it, isn't that what the teenagers do, not my kindergartner? Well, she and Nate had a good time, I guess that is all that matters!
Getting ready for the halftime dance, all the kids went out to do it...I took a video of just Gwen and Nate.
Gwen's friend came over and took these pictures of us, as you can see Eric thought he was going to be in the picture also, he was denied.
She did take a picture of him also.
During "half-time" it is traditional for there to be some sort of dance thing. This year they decided to have a "flash mob" and invited all the kids to do the dance the teachers have apparently been doing all week. The teachers apparently decided to break out in dance periodically during the week. I recorded the whole song.
Bless the heart of my uncoordinated children! (Nate might be really tired and it is possible he fell asleep on the way home and stayed out all night!)

Child of the week
At Gwen's school they have a 'child of the week' program, where the kid gets special treatment. We went in a read her class a book and apparently the class thinks of things they like about her. Just for her kicks, thought I should put it on here because it is so cute.
- she has nice manners
- she has beautiful eyes
- she looks her nicest everyday! (which is kind of funny since they wear uniforms)
- she is nice to others
- she has a nice haircut
- she is very wise
- she includes others
- she is always bucket-filling (which is the theme for this year 'buckets' filling with compliments or taking stuff out with not nice behavior)
- she has nice handwriting
- she has a quiet voice
- she smiles with her eyes

Chitlins
I had an idea for this post earlier, but now it has left my head. So, I guess I will just ramble on about the kids.
Gwen is doing well in school. We just had her parent-teacher conference and they had nothing bad to say at all. She is doing well, she struggled for about a week to get her stuff done in a timely matter, and when she came home with the progress report that said she was "not completing assignments in a timely matter" she straightened right up! She is writing some of her letters and numbers backward and her teacher assured us that is common for children just learning to write, but if she continues to write letters backward mid-year we might have to look into learning issues. I did ask if the backward thing might relate to her left-handedness and that is a possibility also. I am exceedingly proud of Gwen, she was tasked with 2 speaking parts in her school Mass and spoke them so clearly and loudly, I was so proud! (Grandma was also!) The teachers told us they weren't real sure the Mass was going to come together, Gwen along with her classmates would kind of speak softly and then all of a sudden the day before Mass at practice spoke clearly and loudly that it about knocked their socks off. Her teacher said the whole class cheered and rallied around her, my little leader. Let's hope that she only leads to good things and not bad!
Nate is still something else. Too smart for his own good and well loved at Gwen's school. Anyone who knows Gwen knows Nate, he gives them hugs and walks, who am I kidding, runs around the school. He has his little friends and really can't sit still. Seriously, cannot. I am hoping that with time he will learn to focus and possibly sit still. Maybe his teachers will have some luck with him next year. He has spent some time in the class with one of the teachers who is taking classes to get liscensed, whenever she is done working with him she always says he is on par with the 4 year olds she has in class. She also said that her teacher said he was a future writer based on the stories he told her for her class assignment.
We are proud of our sweet, affectionate children, and hope and pray that they continue to stay that way!

The Kindergartener!
Today was a big day for us, the oldest started Kindergarten! She has been so excited to start Kindergarten. I think she's been ready since the day after preK ended. The husband wasn't sure we should send her to preK, but on days like today I was totally sure it was the right thing to do. Gwen was already to go this morning, about 15 minutes before we had to leave, she confidently got out the car and held the 8th graders hand and went into the school.
We had a Meet-the-teacher on Sunday afternoon, where Gwen met her other classmates, her teacher and I took some pictures. Next to the birthday board.
Next to her cubby.
With her crazy brother.
On her first day of school, in her uniform!
On the way to the car.
With her brother, but who's the crazy one now?
Walking out with the eighth grader-in the background in red is her preK teacher, chatting with the Kindergarten aides. I saw her turn, spot Gwen, catch herself and turn around. It was until then that I held it together and I am going to blame her teacher on that.
Gwen only had a half day today, so Nate and I ran some errands, came home, started some laundry and went back to pick her up. You can see her in the picture walking to the steps.
She apparently had a good day. They read a book, and she talked about some stuff that happened, I think we are on par with a good day again tomorrow. She was super nervous and excited about school today. As a matter of fact we apparently decided to have a party last night between 2 & 4am. FUN! Oh wait, not fun at all, we are all exhausted. I was not pleased at all, since I had to get up and run this morning! I am going to try and put them to bed in about an hour or so. (Heh, just kidding) I did enjoy the one on one time with Nate. He was terribly clingy today, but I suspect the is the exhaustion, well that with a side of Momma's boy. I could tell he missed Gwen terribly. I don't know what I'm going to do with Nate all day, I guess I'll find out tomorrow!

The videos-preK graduation
I have uploaded all the videos, they are all less than 5 minutes, some have several songs some have just a couple. I have only viewed the first one, I might eventually go back through and watch them all, but wanted to get them posted, in case someone out there is like, "I can't wait to see the videos!"
I have to give credit to Eric for most of the videos, I think I might have done 1 or 2 of them, and probably the ones that you missed the beginning of because I was like, oh, I'd like to video this one!

preK graduation
Before my sweet Mother's head explodes from the excitement of seeing Gwen's preK graduation I thought I would post the pictures. (Ha! I'm just kidding, she is excited to see them for sure, but she won't be able to see them because she doesn't have an internet connection currently, so this will be a nice surprise for her!) We also have several videos to post, but that will take longer, so for now pictures of my sweet girl. I took pictures of her on her last day of school, just as I did on the first day of school. She looks so different! If you'd like to compare, here is the post about the first day of PreK.
On Thursday was the end of the year ceremony, "graduation" if you will. The kids performed all the songs they had learned throughout the school year. I think it was 10 songs, I am too lazy to go count, sorry. They did seasonal songs and Jesus songs and fun songs. The kids were really funny, some had stage fright and some half participated, but they were cute! After their performance we went back to the classroom where we had refreshments and gathered all the stuff they had for us, including their graduation certificate. They also gave 100 picture album book stuffed with pictures of Gwen and her friends throughout the year. Then we said goodbye to her friends and teachers (sadly one of her teachers couldn't make it, she was in Ohio watching her son become a Capt. in the Air Force).
Gwen seemed fine about school ending but Friday evening she became pretty upset. She was showing Grandma the pictures from her photo album over Skype and I guess she realized how much was going to miss her "kids" and her teachers; she started crying about how much she missed her teachers. I coaxed her into making a card to her teacher that we could deliver to the school. She was still upset but sat in Daddy's lap and started the card before dinner. Both kids were incredibly tired so we put them to bed early and it was very quiet in there and I went to check on Gwen and she still had tears in her eyes and had her photo album opened to her teachers' pages. She was also kissing their pictures. Poor sweet child! Guess we have to work a little on transitions with her.

Possibly my last Halloween post:the School Carnival!
The Friday before Halloween was Gwen's school Halloween Carnival. I was able to sneak out ALONE and help set up. Technically I could have taken the kids, but Grandma was there, so I got to go and be kid free, fortunately Nate took a nap! Which seems to be his MO, the Friday nap. But anyway, they really push the carnival. Before I left to help Gwen got really upset and asked if I was going to play any games, I assured her I wasn't and then she ignored me, I took it she was ok with me going. Fortunately she didn't find out her friend was there while her Mom volunteered.
Now Gwen was so excited to go to the Carnival, they had the whole school darkened, only black lights, they had indoor games, food and outdoor stuff. At the indoor games you received prizes (candy), so we did those twice. But what was funny is Gwen was looking for her friends. And was kind of upset we didn't see any. Then, she found her classmate and started squealing, she was so excited! My Mom might remember that forever. We did finally see her favorite friend, last thing of the night, Grandma took pictures of the silly girls together and they were so excited and pretended they were pirates, I don't know why!
We had a good time, between the carnival, mall trick or treating and neighborhood trick or treating, Nate still ocassionally asked to go trick or treating. They got some good use out of their costumes and the candy is almost all gone, thanks to Daddy. Here are the picture from the carnival.

PRESCHOOL!
This week Gwen started preschool! It is a weird thing to have only 1 kid for half the day and to get up so early to take Gwen to school. But here we are with a preschooler! It has been a long week for us. The festivities started Saturday, Eric and I went to a child protection class where we learned how to notice the signs of abusive situations and considered what we should do if we suspected something. It was interesting and informative! Then we went to Mass followed by a Ice Cream social where we were supposed to meet some of the other new families at the school. We met 1 or 2. The next day we had the "meet the teacher" where we meet Gwen's teachers and got our packets of information, had pictures made and you know took pictures. Wednesday morning I had oreintation with the other parents of the preschool kids. We learned the drop off procedures and things about the class and signed up for when we wanted to volunteer. It was a busy morning!
Thurday was the big day, Gwen's first day of preschool. I was a little nervous she wouldn't get out of the car. She had been acting nervous and we were worried she would not get out of the car. But she did! The school doesn't use buses so they have drop off procedures. The eighth graders help with the drop off-you pull up to the stop sign and then everyone from the stop sign to the cone (about 10 cars) lets their kids out. Fortunately Gwen's teacher was outside (she told us she would be so they would see a familiar face) and I waved her down and she came and got Gwen. Fortunately the teacher has been doing this for a long time, she grabbed Gwen's backpack and just said some stuff like, "what do you have in here? I bet something special?" reached for Gwen's hand and out she went! All the kids meet in the school hall for prayers, but the preK kids go to a different room off the hall because apparently it gets overwhelming waiting with all the big kids. One of the eighth graders walks the preK kids into the little room with toys. When it is prayer time they come out and then go to their room and start their day. And I think that is all we know except for the schedule they gave us. We do also know that at the end of their day they come back outside and wait on the benches patiently for the parents to come get them. Here are the pictures from the first day! I should mention Mom and I were both taking pictures so some of them are repeats, or almost the same...
I was a little sad I couldn't go in with Gwen and take those cute first day pictures of her with her teachers and her desk. But we did take pictures at the meet the teacher...I think we got a picture of her with everything with her name on it! After the meet the teacher we went to dinner, both the kids wanted to sit next to Grandma!
